These days an organization is so busy with staying in business that anything that doesn't directly contribute to profit is put on the back burner. The area that most often suffers is the communications plan, even while it's true that this can assist your business with reaching potential customers. With such limited time and resources at your disposal, it's tempting to leave this job all to someone else and let them figure it out. But should you?

Every single thing your organization does either builds or erodes your brand. Each piece of collateral, social post, fan page, every sitelet and banner ad is either contributing to a salient brand message and market position, or working against it. There is no such thing as treading water. It's sink or swim.

Once you've decided on a brand voice for your organization, give it time to catch hold. Epidemics start with localized outbreaks, and social epidemics are no exception. Your brand is your personality, and your customers want to feel they're doing business with someone familiar. Let them get to know you across multiple media channels. Don't fall prey to multiple personality disorder--even highly targeted demographic plays shouldn't alter your brand.

One advantage of social media tools is that they're free advertising spaces for "word of mouth" or viral marketing. As the top 3rd most trusted source of information about a company or product, rating higher than corporate advertising or news/radio reports, word of mouth advertising provides all of us with a level playing field. You can now compete with the "big guys" because it's no longer a matter of who has the most money.
